William and Religion
William was a very religious man. He was catholic and he built a lot of churches. Although he religious, in 1070, he refused to give church more authority than his own. William separated ecclesiastical courts from the lay courts and brought many of church's everyday function under law. That was definitely different and new in strange way to the church. But William thought making strange decisions or doing strange things was part of his everyday life. "Men sometimes have strange motives for the things they do," said William.
